If You Come to Berlin

I still remember my arrival in Berlin by car at night – how I drove past the illuminated Brandenburg Gate, on to Kreuzberg and Bergmannstraße. A friend I met at the International Center of Photography had invited me to come to his place first. As a regular Kreuzberger, he was out and about at night, of course, so he left the key to his apartment at Café Atlantik. I got it there and it was upstairs on the third floor, in the rear building. I looked around. Shower in the kitchen, toilet a few steps down in the stairwell. It was completely quiet. What a peaceful place compared to the never-sleeping New York. The next morning, the windows were wide open and the summer wind blew gently through the small rooms. “Non, je ne regrette rien” by Edit Piaf sounded across the courtyard from the neighboring apartment. It was a good start in Berlin. But would I be able to take photos here?
