Aus Der Kurve

„From the curve“ – In Berlin, I initially worked in a kitchen to make ends meet. I still remember Gülcan, the Turkish dishwasher, very well. She stood at the sink from morning till night, her back bent, scrubbing whatever was put in front of her. She raised three children on her wages as a single mother until one day she could do no more: Breast cancer, she told us in tears. After surgery and rehab, she was back months later, washing dishes as if nothing had happened. She sang and laughed as before, so warmly and genuinely. That impressed me.
